Vintage Omani Hamhoon / Hirz Qafa – Silver & Gold Head Ornament

A three-tier Omani head ornament, known as a hamhoon or hirz qafa, probably from the Sharqiyah region of eastern Oman, circa 1950. Traditionally suspended at the back of a woman’s headdress, it combines ceremonial adornment with a protective amulet case.

A triangular upper plaque and rectangular central panel are linked by multiple handmade silver chains to a larger rectangular hirz, traditionally intended to hold folded Quranic verses or prayers. Applied gold decoration with engraved floral scrolls contrasts with beaded silver borders, while pendant chains and silver terminals form a moving fringe below.

Condition
Very good vintage condition, with light surface wear and patina consistent with age and traditional use. The gold decoration is well preserved, the chains are complete and functional, and the amulet case remains intact. No significant structural damage noted.

Traditional use & display
Originally worn at the back of a headdress for weddings and important ceremonies. Today it is particularly suited to an ethnographic jewellery collection, a framed presentation or a wall display.
