Himalayan Sacred Necklace – Antique Pema Raka Carnelian Beads & Bronze Pendant
A remarkable Himalayan necklace composed of antique Pema Raka carnelian beads, traditionally revered within Tibetan and Himalayan culture, combined with aged bronze elements and a large leaf-shaped pendant.
Pema Raka are not simply carnelian beads. They belong to a distinctive Himalayan bead tradition in which these warm red and orange stones were highly valued and associated with ritual, protective and talismanic qualities. Old examples were treasured, handled and worn over long periods, sometimes as personal amuletic ornaments.
The name Pema Raka is generally associated with the idea of the “red lotus” or “blood-red lotus,” referring to the characteristic red-orange colour of the stone.
This necklace brings together 22 old Pema Raka beads in a remarkable variety of forms: large irregular nuggets, flattened rondels and rounded or barrel-shaped beads. Their colours range from warm orange-red and terracotta to deep russet and reddish brown.
Many of the beads display the characteristics particularly appreciated in old Pema Raka: softened contours, extensive surface wear, natural banding, irregularities and deeply worn perforations. Comparable Tibetan examples show similarly smooth, almost oily surfaces resulting from prolonged handling and wear.
The two substantial beads framing the pendant give the necklace a particularly powerful presence. At its centre hangs a large, simple bronze leaf-shaped pendant, creating a sculptural composition while respecting the strong character of the old beads.
The antique beads have been recently assembled into the present necklace, using bronze spacers, strong steel wire and a new bronze hook clasp.
The result is a contemporary wearable composition built around a collection of old sacred Himalayan beads with a long cultural and spiritual history.
Pema Raka – Sacred Himalayan Beads
Pema Raka occupy a particular place within Tibetan bead culture.
Traditionally valued not only for their colour and beauty, they were also associated with protection, ritual practice and talismanic power. Old examples could be preserved and worn for generations, acquiring the exceptionally smooth surfaces and worn perforations characteristic of prolonged use.
Their precise chronology is difficult to establish. Although some Pema Raka have traditionally been considered extremely ancient, surviving old examples can belong to different periods; documented specialist examples have been attributed to around the 15th–16th century.
For this reason, the beads in this necklace are described as antique Pema Raka without assigning them a precise date.

The necklace itself is a recent assemblage incorporating antique beads; it should not be interpreted as an intact antique necklace in its original configuration.
Condition
The Pema Raka beads show extensive authentic wear, including softened surfaces, abrasion, old chips, fissures, irregularities and wear around the perforations.
These traces are particularly important to the character of the necklace: they testify to the beads' long previous lives rather than detracting from them.
The bronze elements show patination and surface wear. The necklace has recently been restrung and is ready to wear.
A Necklace with History
This is not simply a carnelian statement necklace.
Its principal components are old Pema Raka beads — objects traditionally treasured within Himalayan culture for their beauty as well as their ritual and protective significance. Their worn surfaces preserve the physical traces of prolonged handling and use.
Reassembled into a contemporary necklace, they retain this history while becoming wearable once again.
