Chinese Art Deco Butterfly Amulet Necklace – Silver, Enamel & Stone Beads
Striking Chinese Art Deco necklace, dating from the Republic period, circa 1930s–1940s.
The centerpiece is a large hollow butterfly-shaped silver amulet box, decorated with blue, turquoise-green and yellow enamel. The butterfly is an auspicious Chinese motif associated with happiness, love and longevity. Its box-like construction also recalls the Chinese tradition of protective lock amulets.
The pendant is combined with warm cream, peach and pink carnelian/agate beads, contrasted with lapis lazuli and turquoise-coloured beads. Two large agate beads are framed by small blue enamelled caps.
