Antique Tibetan Akor Head Ornaments – Silver & Turquoise – Lhasa Pair

A pair of antique Tibetan akor head ornaments from Lhasa, Central Tibet, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. Each articulated ornament is densely set with natural turquoise cabochons and plaques, ranging from pale green-blue to deeper turquoise with dark matrix.

A large floral rosette forms the centre of each piece, framed by beaded silver borders and further turquoise-set sections with small red glass accents. Their scale, 146 g combined weight and surviving reverse fittings give the pair a strong sculptural and ethnographic interest.

Condition
Very good antique condition, with old silver patina, normal scratches, surface wear and small irregularities of hand construction. No obvious missing turquoise elements noted. The red glass details and reverse attachment fittings remain present. The turquoise shows individual variations in colour, matrix and surface wear.

Traditional use & display
Akor were worn beside the ears but supported by the hairstyle or headdress, rather than suspended directly from the earlobes. This substantial pair should therefore be understood as traditional head ornaments rather than conventional modern earrings. They are particularly suited to an ethnographic jewellery collection or a framed display. The two historical photographs illustrate the context of wear and are not included in the sale.
