Heavy Designer Necklace with Ancient Fossil Shell & Ethnographic Beads
A bold and highly individual designer necklace assembled from a collection of old and antique ethnographic beads, combining different materials, origins and periods.
The necklace is dominated by a remarkable group of large ivory-white to warm cream beads, several displaying deeply worn surfaces and natural colour variations ranging from white to ochre. Many are decorated with spiralling incised lines, while one particularly interesting bead carries a pattern of small impressed dots.
Some of these large pale beads are attributed to fossilised shell and traditionally associated with Afghanistan and Central Asia. They are combined with other old beads probably originating from the Himalayan region, together with warm brown and reddish beads possibly made from African bauxite.
The different degrees of wear, irregular shapes and surface patination are an important part of the character of the necklace and suggest that the components had individual histories before being brought together in the present composition.
A small group of reddish-brown and bronze spacers marks the centre, from which hangs a substantial pale bead pendant, creating a distinctive 7 cm central drop.
The necklace is completed with an aged metal hook closure.

The Beads
The most striking elements are the substantial cream and ivory-coloured beads, individually shaped and showing considerable variation in size, form and surface.
Several are decorated with a characteristic helical or spiral incision, while another carries a series of small impressed dots.
Their surfaces show extensive handling and wear: softened edges, patination, staining, scratches, small losses and irregularities. These characteristics give the assemblage its particularly strong archaeological and ethnographic appearance.
